ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE APRIL 2024 SESSION
This month’s gathering is on the third Thursday (April 18th) due to overlap with the FASD Conference in Seattle on April 11th.
Parent input in IEPs is not only mandated by law, it is an essential component of developing effective IEPs. The perspectives of the student’s family and caregivers are essential for true understanding of the student’s needs and provides vital information on what types of interventions and supports have, or have not, been successful.
Parental input is also a necessary component for creating a comprehensive evaluation to assess the student’s educational needs. Parents have the ability to provide education, history, and critical data that can provide indispensable guidance for the assessors.

The FASD & the IEP Mentorship Coalition is a program designed for people working with students with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) who have, or need, an Individualized Education Program (IEP). This program recognizes and focuses on the need for ongoing growth and education regarding the needs of students with FASD.
Mentorship Coalition details
The FASD & the IEP Mentorship Coalition meets monthly via Zoom on the 2nd Thursday of the month (unless otherwise noted) from 5:30pm – 7:00pm, Pacific Time. This is an ongoing program, new attendees can register at any time.
We welcome general education teachers, special education teachers, administrators, school psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, families, social workers, mental health therapists, behavioral interventionists, and anyone else who participates in IEP meetings with students who experience FASD.
This mentorship opportunity will combine direct interaction, discourse, case studies, and education relating to FASD & the IEP. Group participation and respectful dialogue is encouraged.
Please note that this is not intended as an introduction to FASD or the IEP process, nor is it a substitute for direct training courses in FASD or the IEP. All participants must have some prior training and/or experience with both subjects before joining.
PREREQUISITES
- Minimum/equivalent of 10 hours of trainings in FASD, including an understanding of the neurobehavioral model
and
- Minimum/equivalent of 10 hours of training in IEPs, including an understanding of IDEA
If you do not have formal training in these areas but have a strong knowledge base in both, please contact us to schedule a time to talk and assess whether this Mentorship program would be a good fit.

You are welcome to seek out training from other reputable organizations as well. The organizations listed below are provided as resources only and have been included here due to their consistent reputation for providing quality training and information regarding FASD.

We will not be providing direct advocacy support nor consultation regarding specific, individual cases. However, we will have opportunities for presentation of case studies which are real scenarios and participants will have the opportunity to request their specific case study be presented to the group.
